Setting The Stage: school procedures, routines, and expectations
•ARRIVAL
We begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. It is extremely important that your child is in the classroom on time. If your child arrives late, he/she will be marked tardy and will need to obtain a tardy slip. If your child is early, between 7:30-7:45, he/she should report to our classroom or Ms. Nordmann's classroom (on the assigned date placed outside our door). After the 7:45 announcement, your child will come to straight to our classroom.
•DISMISSAL
Bus riders and off-campus after school programs are dismissed starting at 2:30. Carpool, MAS, and walkers are dismissed after bus riders are dismissed.
If your normal transportation plans change for any reason, I must have written notification of that change prior to dismissal. Emails and Remind messages are acceptable for dismissal changes, however, last minute changes will require a phone call to the school.
During the day I check my email at the following periods:
• 7:30-8:00am (Beginning of the day)
•9:20-10:25am (During planning/specials time)
•2:35-3:30pm (After dismissal)
If there’s an emergency that needs an immediate response, please email me and contact the main office to be safe. I generally will respond to emails upon receipt.
•ABSENCES
When your child is absent for any reason you must send a note on the returning day stating the reason for the absence and any further information that is appropriate (i.e. no physical activity, etc.). Absence due to illness, medical appointments, religious holidays, and death in family are considered excused absences. Family vacations and trips are unexcused absences.
•COMMUNICATION
Weekly Website update-
This website will take place of the weekly newsletter. It will be updated every Monday. I will sent out a "Remind Message" when the website has been updated.
•Remind-
Starting Aug. 1st, I will use the Remind app for reminders and quick updates. Please sign up for remind today. It can be sent to your cell phone (text) or email.
See the "Communication Tools" page to get signed up!
•Communication Folders-
Every Wednesday you will receive a parent/school communication folder from your child. That folder will contain any information from the administration, teachers (including specials, ESOL, and Challenge teachers) and any student work/tests from the previous week that is not in the writing journal. Please sign the folder weekly to confirm receipt of the information and work.
•HOMEWORK
Students will have homework Monday through Thursday. A homework planner will be given out weekly. The homework is to be completed in the homework packet and returned on Friday. If your child completes an assignment that doesn’t require a written response (ex: practice the spelling rule on spellingcity.com), please provide a parent signature (or initials) confirming that the task was completed on the homework planner. Once your child has completed his or her homework independently, please check the homework and help with corrections. Homework is a completion grade. It will be checked every Friday for completion and is 10% of your child’s grade.

•BEHAVIOR AND CONDUCT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Please read the following description to help you understand the behavior calendar. Each day your child will color his/her calendar using one of the following colors:
BLUE- This means your child has maintained the highest MES expectations . B.L.U.E. is our new positive behavior initiative that promotes a unified school culture of great behavior and conduct. BLUE stands for: Be Respectful, Listen and Learn, Use self control, Embrace Everyone. Your child will begin their day on the color blue, and will have to maintain this color by exhibiting these appropriate behaviors. The first two weeks of school will be dedicated to building a strong understanding of the expectations.
GREEN- This means your child had to be reminded of the expectations, but with the reminder they were able to self correct and continue their day upholding the expectations. Being on Green is still a very good day! I will also give 1 verbal warning before moving a student's color.
YELLOW- This means that your child had to take time to inwardly self reflect about their actions. After moving to Green, I will give another verbal warning before moving a student to yellow. This color allows the student time to reflect about their behavioral choices before a consequence is given. His/Her actions will be recorded using the number code on the calendar.
RED-This means that your child has continued to make poor choices and needs parental support. They will complete a "Stop and Think" note that will have to be signed with a parent signature. The "Stop and Think" note will allow the child to write what they failed to self correct in their behavior and what they will do better next time. It is important to have parental support when a child comes home with the color red. If your child comes home with the color red, please ask for their "Stop and Think" note. After reading it, please talk with your child about their behavior and remind them of your expectations (and the school's expectations). There will be a consequence given if a student moves to red. This consequence will be at the discretion of the teacher and will be suitable for the misconduct. The action(s) will be number coded on the calendar.
Students are able to move back up on the behavior chart if they consistently show effort throughout the day. The only time a student can not move back up is if they get to the color red. Once a child moves to red, they would have had many opportunities to self correct and reflect.
Please sign/initial your child’s behavior calendar daily. There are many COOL rewards that will be granted to the students that stay on GREEN and/or BLUE consistently. Every week I will give incentives to these students; however they MUST have their parents’ signature on each day to receive it.
We also have small group (teams) and whole class incentives for positive behavior!!!
